Reviewing activities fall into three categories:
- peer reviews
- external reviews for tenure and promotion
- external program reviews
Peer Reviews
Blake Scott and I often talked about the fact that reviewing work is intellectual, research work. Folks are asked to review a manuscript because they know something about the topic. That’s m
External Reviews for Tenure and Promotion
Since I was tenured and promoted myself, I have written on average of 4 reviews each year. When I joined the ranks of full professor, that number has inched up to 5 reviews a year. Following are a sampling of the institutions for which I have served as an external review for tenure and promotion or promotion. It should be noted that I have also done reviews for teaching cases, which is likely because of my advocacy for and research on contingent labor.

External Program Reviews
The majority of public institutions in the US will require an external program review of their academic programs anywhere from every 5-7 years. Some institutions require a program review before launching a new program. Both of these have the same characteristics and the same need for review of strengths and opportunities.
While these can be time intensive (1-3 days on campus or online) and labor intensive (a comprehensive report has to be written), I find this task immensely enjoyable. It’s wonderful to get the opportunity to see the inside of other institutions, and I hope that our recommendations (cause these are usually done in collaboration) help the programs help their students. Following is a sample of institutions for which I have done an external program review:
- University of Houston Downtown
- James Madison University
- University of Arkansas
- Middle Tennessee State University
